New online course – This Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing has been designed for candidates who wish to develop their skills and knowledge to work and/or seek employment as a gym instructor. Candidates will be equipped with the skills to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise programmes to a range of clients. The qualification will be delivered online with the use of online lectures and online learning resources. There are two different options to complete the assessments to work around each candidates circumstances.

Home Study

Once the candidate completes the application process they will get access to resources to help them prepare for the course and their assessments.

Resources

Manual – Candidates will receive a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing manual when booking and be asked to read through specific sections prior to the delivery of the course. The manual has end of section questions after each section, this helps the candidate check what knowledge they have retained and areas they may need to focus on.

Videos – Candidates will get access to all practical videos of demonstrations and correct techniques for Mobility exercises, Cardiovascular machines, Pre and post stretches, resistance machines, free weights, body weight exercises and functional exercises.

Mock theory paper – Candidates will receive a copy of an example theory paper to help with revision and set

There are worksheets that are required to be completed before the course starts. Candidates will receive guidance on this when booking.

Online Delivery

Online Delivery

Candidates will study some of the course through home study as well as four days of face to face delivery through an online platform ZOOM. See below the course structure:

Day 1 Online Delivery

Introduction/Day to Day structure

Health and safety of facilities
Collecting information/fitness testing – demo’s/Behavioural changes/Stage of change/SMART goals and goal setting
Consultation practice

 

Day 2 Online Delivery 

Importance of healthy lifestyle, healthy eating, and hydration
Understanding how to plan and instruct gym-based exercise
Cardiovascular methods, demo’s/videos, intensities, RPE, Heart Rate and pulse raising
Pre stretch static/dynamic – videos
Resistance methods – Resistance Machines, free weights
Spotting

 

Day 3 Online Delivery

Body weight exercises
Functional exercises
Cool down and flexibility
Consultation Observation Assessment – client complete programme
Instructing safe and effective gym-based exercise/Teaching sequence
Monitoring the safety and intensity of the exercise
Adapting exercise to accommodate different client needs

 

Day 4 Online Delivery 

Discussion of group training assessment
How to plan home based programming 1-1 sessions and group fitness classes
Home based training considerations
Practicalities Insurance, Parq and use of technology for supporting clients and safeguarding yourself

Assessments

Due to the current COVID 19 situation, Fitness Training Scotland (FTS) are offering our candidates two different options to complete the remainder of the Certificate in Gym Instructing qualification after the Online delivery part of the qualification is delivered.

Option 1– Face to Face

Theory 
The theory assessment is completed Online, the assessment is multiple-choice, there are 50 questions and the allocated time to complete it is 1 hour and 45 mins. The pass mark is 35/50.
A date is set for each course.

Worksheets and Assignments 
Throughout the online delivery course candidates will be set coursework/assignments, worksheets etc and will be marked by their course tutor.

Practical  – Wait until the gym facilities reopen and Fitness Training Scotland can deliver one day of face to face teaching and a day for practical assessments, covering the following content:

Day 1 Practical delivery at a facility
o Run through all practical elements of the course where our assessors can check the candidate’s technique.
o Practice summative assessment

Day 2 Practical Assessment day
o Summative observed session
o Session self-evaluation
o Modular summative observation

We deliver from Leisure facilities in the below areas, once facilities reopen FTS will supply our candidates with available dates and locations to choose from:
Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Glenrothes, Perth, Cumbernauld, and Livingston.

Professional discussion
The professional discussion will take place via zoom, this discussion will be recorded by the assessor. The interactive professional discussion will incorporate the use of equipment/technique videos provided by Active IQ which will include both correct and poor technique. The videos will include 30 second silent video clips of a person using gym equipment. After viewing the video, the candidate will be expected to explain the set-up requirements of each piece of equipment/ exercise and the coaching technique they would use when instructing a client using the equipment/exercise.

Summative observed session

• Candidates will video themselves following Active IQ Digital Recording Guidelines (please see links below), delivering their planned session with their client.

• Practical assessment must be delivered in line with NHS Public Health and government guidelines, either 121 outdoors, or indoors with a member of the same household

• Candidates may use members of their household as clients to participate in summative practical assessment

• Candidates will adapt the programme delivery to the environment their current environment.

• Candidates can choose from the equipment and exercises available to them.

Entry Requirements

Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended.

The course requires physical exertion, and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2.

Certification

On completion candidates will be awarded with an Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing certificate.
