Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing

Once the candidate completes the application process, they will get access to resources to help them prepare for the course and their assessments.

Resources:

Manual– Candidates will receive a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing manual when booking and be asked to read through specific sections prior to the delivery of the course. The manual has end of section questions after each section, this helps the candidate check what knowledge they have retained and areas they may need to focus on.

Videos–Candidates will get access to all practical videos of demonstrations and correct techniques for mobility exercises, cardiovascular machines, pre and post stretches, resistance machines, free weights, body weight exercises and functional exercises.

Mock theory paper- Candidates will receive a copy of an example theory paper to help with revision.

Course work required before the course commences – There are worksheets that are required to be completed before the course starts. Candidates will receive guidance on this when booking.

Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training

Once the candidate completes the application process, they will get access to resources to help them prepare for the course and their assessments.

E-learning- is included in the cost of the course. It is designed to offer a different learning style from the manual as some of our candidates prefer visual and interactive learning as they struggle to study from the book alone. Within the e-learning resource it will cover:

  • The principles of nutrition and application to exercise and health
  • Encouraging positive health and fitness behaviours in clients
  • Programme design and delivery for personal training
  • Professionalism and business acumen for personal trainers

Active IQ has advised that candidates would require a laptop or computer to access your e-Learning account as an iPad or mobile phone would not have the full capability to perform all the functions within the e-Learning.

In person delivery

Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing

The practical element of the course is delivered over the five days where the following elements will be covered. (This may vary).

Day 1- Introduction, Day to Day structure and Assessment requirements Health and Safety of facility, Customer Care, Gathering Information, Consultation, SMART goals, and Fitness Testing.

Day 2- Completion of Consultation Observation, Introduction to CV machines, Mobility, Pulse Raiser, Stretches, Training Zones and Planning CV Training.

Day 3- CV Practice (Mobility, Pulse Raiser, Stretches and Main CV), Introduction and Practice of Resistance machines, Free weights, Functional and Body Weight exercises. Plan Group Programme.

Day 4- Practise 1-1 programme, Completion of Session evaluation questions, Cool Down and Post stretches, Cool Down and Post stretches

Day 5- All day – Group Induction practical Assessments

Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training

This course is delivered over 6 days where the following elements are covered. (This may vary):

Assessments

Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing

Candidates are assessed throughout the course by written questions and practical continuous assessment. The final assessments normally take place two weeks after the last day of the course, and they consist of:

Online Theory paper – The theory assessment is completed Online, the assessment is multiple-choice, there are 50 questions and the allocated time to complete it is 1 hour and 45 mins. The pass mark is 35/50.
A date is set for each course.

  • Principles of anatomy, physiology, and fitness

Practical Assessment:

Within the course delivery days candidates will be assessed working in a small group delivering a range of exercises.

A practical day will be set so that the candidate can complete their summative assessment. From a planned programme that is devised by the candidate on the course, the candidate will induct a client safely and effectively onto a range of equipment. Afterwards they will evaluate the session.

Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training

Throughout the course candidates will be set Coursework/Projects, worksheets etc and will be marked by their course tutor.

Online Theory Assessments – There are two online theory assessments for this qualification, the assessments are multiple-choice, there are 40 questions for each assessment and the allocated time to complete it is 90 mins. The pass mark is 28/40.
A date is set for each course.

  • Applied anatomy and physiology for exercise health and fitness
  • The principles of nutrition and their application to exercise and health

Practical Assessment:

There are a few modular practical observations for the following areas: Consultation, Personal Training session and Training Techniques, these will be assessed within the course delivery days.

A practical day will be set so that the candidate can complete their summative assessment. From a planned programme that is devised by the candidate on the course, the candidate will deliver a Personal Training session to an experienced client using a range of Advanced training methods. Afterwards the candidate will evaluate the session.

Entry Requirements

Learners are required to be 16 years and above to be accepted onto the course.

Experience of gym-based exercise, including free weights, is highly recommended.

The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading, and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2.

Certification

On successful completion of these qualifications, the candidate will receive both e-certificates for the Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing and the Level 3 Active IQ Diploma in Personal Training which will allow the candidate to apply for entry onto CIMSPA.  These qualifications together will enable you to work as a Personal Trainer.

Stage of Change Module

Fitness Training Scotland have teamed up with Dr Gary Mendoza of Stages of Change to bring you the best Personal Training Package to help you develop your Personal Training Business and secure more clients.

This online tutor taught course will teach you how to enhance your client engagement. This will improve your business by increasing your ability to attract and convert prospective clients from initial first contact. It will also enhance client retention as you will be able to monitor your clients progress (from a psychological perspective) and most importantly understand what actions to take if a client is starting to relapse and will possibly leave your programme. The average client is most probably worth several thousands of pounds per year to a trainer, so it is important to understand these elements to help your retention.
You will also be able to assist clients with other lifestyle behavioural changes such as those required for exercise adherence, smoking cessation. This important counselling skill has been incorporated into the behaviour change workshop to enable instructors to guide clients who are ambivalent about lifestyle change (sitting on the fence) and help them take the next step.

Resources
Candidates will receive an online manual one week before the course commences.

Online Delivery
Day 1 – Module A (summary)
This module covers:
• Why behaviour change is so complex.
• How and where the stages of change and transtheoretical models tie into this.
• Different styles of communication used in motivational interviewing.
• Why communication is effective
• Listening Skills
• Benefits of client/coaching relationship
*All the above are supported with group practice throughout the module. A homework assignment will be given out.

Day 2 – Module B (summary)
This module covers:
• OARS Acronym – Open questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summarise as it is applied to Motivational Interviewing.
• Closed questioning
• Four fundamental processes for Motivational Interviewing
• Adding structure to the consultation process
• Different types of change talk a client may use.
*A homework assignment will be given out.

Day 3 – Module C (summary)
This module covers:
• Recognising change talk and responding to it
• Developing skills from last two modules
• Summaries to collect change talk and how to evoke change talk
Candidates will practice these skills in groups of two or three. A homework assignment will be given out.

Day 4 – Module D (summary)
This module covers:
• Best way to deal with both sustain talk and discord in a motivational interview consistent manner
• Evoke confidence talk from clients
• Recognise readiness to change
• When to appropriately move into the planning phase
• When to offer advise and how it should be done
The final practices in this module bring together all the skills learnt over the previous modules. This gives candidates the confidence to start offering consultations that will incorporate the techniques, skills and get better results from their clients.

Assessment
There are assignments to complete each week. This forms the assessment for the workshop. The assessment is a 5-minute video recording of a consultation.
