Candidates will receive a Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral manual when booking and be asked to read through specific sections and complete worksheets prior to the course commencing.

Delivery
Course delivery
The course will be delivered over three days, covering the following subjects:
- anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
- applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme
- the principles of collecting information to plan an exercise referral programme, the principles of risk stratification in exercise referral and the principles and procedures of record keeping
- how to identify goals with exercise referral patients and instruct, adapt, and review exercise session with these patients. How to plan, prepare, monitor and adapt an exercise referral programme with patients and understand the importance of long-term behaviour change for these patients
- the current healthcare systems in the UK, the exercise referral process, the roles and responsibilities of the professional within an exercise referral scheme and the role and importance of exercise referral, related policies and key documents
- the concept of a patient centred approach
- the clinical features of medical conditions relevant to exercise referral programmes, the relationship between exercise and specified exercise referral medical conditions, the accepted methods for treatment/management of medical conditions relevant to exercise referral programmes and how to programme safe, effective exercise programmes for patients with specified exercise referral medical conditions

Assessment
Online Theory – only for candidates that don’t hold their Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification.
The theory assessments are completed Online, the assessments are multiple-choice, there are two theory papers:
- Applied Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health (pass mark 28/40)
- Applying the principles of Nutrition to a physical activity programme (pass mark 28/40)
A theory date is set for each course.
Worksheets and Assignments
Throughout the course candidates will be set coursework/assignments, worksheets etc and will be marked by their course tutor.
Practical Assessment (Face to Face at a venue)
All practical assessments need to be assessed in person at one of our locations. When booking, each course has an allocated location.
There are two practical assessments and an evaluation:
- Practical demonstration
- Practical assessment
- Completion of a self-evaluation
Entry Requirements
Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Personal Training (or equivalent), however candidates may still work towards this qualification with their level 2 Certificate in Fitness/Gym Instructing qualification, they will need to complete day one of the course and sit the Anatomy & Physiology and Nutrition theory and case study assessments.
Certification
On completion candidates will be awarded with an Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral e-certificate. Active IQ are no longer offering hard copy certificates.
