The level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Gym and level 3 Certificate in Personal Training package combines both qualifications you need to work successfully as a qualified Personal Trainer. By completing both courses this will enable you to induct clients safely and effectively onto gym equipment and plan and devise programmes using advanced training methods.

Accreditation

On successful completion of these qualifications you will receive a level 3 Active IQ Diploma in Personal Training which will allow you to apply for entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REP’s) at level 3. This qualification will enable you to work as a Personal Trainer.

Entry Requirements

Learners are required to be 16 years and above to be accepted onto the course.
Experience of gym-based exercise, including free weights, is highly recommended.
The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary.
There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2.

Assessment

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Gym based

You are assessed throughout the course by written questions and practical continuous assessment. The final assessments normally take place two weeks after the last day of the course, and they consist of:
Two Multiple choice theory Papers:
1. Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise and Health (Pass mark 35/50)
2. Principles for Exercise, Fitness and Health (Pass mark 23/32)
Practical Assessment:
From a planned programme that is devised by yourself on the course, you will induct a client safely and effectively onto a range of equipment. Afterwards you will evaluate the session.

Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training
Two Multiple choice theory Papers:
1. Applied Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise, Health and Fitness (Pass mark 28/40)
2. The principles of Nutrition and their application to Exercise and Health. (Pass mark 28/40)
Practical Assessment: There are a few modular practical observations for the following areas: Consultation, Personal Training session and Training Techniques.
From a planned programme that is devised by yourself on the course, you will deliver a Personal Training session to an experienced client using a range of Advanced training methods. Afterwards you will evaluate the session.
There are also worksheets and assignments to complete as well as a case study.

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Gym based


ALL Anatomy & Physiology and Principles for Exercise Fitness and Health is home study. Where you would be required to complete the following sections prior to attending the course:
Anatomy & Physiology

• Joints in the skeleton
• The muscular system
• The nervous system
• The respiratory system
• The circulatory system
• The energy systems
• The life course of the musculoskeletal system and implications for special populations
Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health
• The components of fitness
• The effects of exercise on the body
• The principles and variables of fitness in an exercise programme
• Health benefits of physical activity
• Monitoring exercise intensity
• Contraindications to exercise and key safety guidelines for special populations
• The importance of healthy eating

Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training

Most of the theory is home study, although there are two revision days allocated on the course for both Anatomy & Physiology and Nutrition.
Prior to the course you would be required to complete the following:
– E-learning provided from Active IQ
– Nutrition section of the Active IQ course manual
– Anatomy and Physiology section of the Active IQ manual
– A 7-day food diary fully completed and to be brought with you on day 1 of the course
– Sign up to Archon Combine and view the video’s detailing the fitness testing we will be covering on the course.

Structure of the courses

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Gym based

The practical element of the course is delivered over the five days where the following elements will be covered. (This may vary).
Day 1 – Introduction, H&S of the facility, Job role and skills and qualities of the instructor, collecting information, Mobility exercises, Cardio-Vascular machines, Warm up and Exercise Monitoring
Day 2 –Run through warm-up components again, preparatory stretches, H&S, safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, H&S checks, Main Cardiovascular workout.
Day 3 – Teach cardiovascular machines, Resistance machines, Free weight exercises, Body Weight exercises, planning resistance exercises, Teach resistance exercises.
Day 4 – Pulse lowering, Post workout stretches, circuit class, Plan all sessions
Day 5 – Mock theory papers
Paper 1. Anatomy, Physiology, Exercise (multiple choice – 50 questions)
Paper 2. Principles for Exercise, Fitness, and Health (Multiple choice – 32 questions)
Mock Practical assessment – this will involve you using the programme that you have planned on the course for your client and putting it into practice. You will induct your client on all components of the programme and teach them safely and effectively throughout.

Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training
This course is delivered over 8 days where the following elements are covered. (This may vary):
• Day 1 – Anatomy & Physiology theory revision, Client Consultation and Food Diary Analysis
• Day 2 – Nutrition theory revision, Behavior’s, Habits and SMART Goals
• Day 3 – Fitness Testing and Postural Assessment
• Day 4 – Cardiovascular and Resistance advanced training methods
• Day 5 – Nutrition theory mock exam, Programming, Medical Conditions and Special Populations
• Day 6 – Adaptive Programming, Stretching, Business Planning
• Day 7 – Nutrition theory exam and Anatomy & Physiology mock exam, Business Planning
• Day 8 – Practical assessment practice, Motor skills and Alternative Environments
